Transfăgărăşan – the second highest travel road

Transfăgărăşan was built as a strategic military route; represents the second highest and most beautiful paved road in Romania, after Transalpina road. It runs North to South across the tallest sections of the Carpathian Mountains, between Moldoveanu (the highest peak in the country) and Negoiu (the second highest). The road join the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia, and also the cities of Sibiu and Curtea de Argeş. The road passes through the longest road tunnel in Romania, Bâlea Tunnel (887 m). One of the most beautiful place on the road is Bâlea Lake, with the Ice Hotel in the winter and many spectacular hiking places inthe summer.

An important piece of the Transfăgărăşan puzzle is represented by Vidraru Lake, which covers an area of 10 km, as an circular cerc. Vidraru Lake has the highest bungee jumping runway (166 m), where extreme sports fans can “tickle” their senses. There is something for everyone; for a continuing welfare of all, everyone can have a good time by taking lake cruises, riding a bicycle or renting paddle boats for fishing.
